The UCLA Herbarium serves to assist students and faculty of the University of California, Los Angeles with the study of plant diversity. Ongoing research projects of the UCLA Herbarium include ecological studies of habitats and plant communities, floristics of the Santa Monica Mountains, floristics of urban Los Angeles including the UCLA Campus, as well as taxonomic studies including contributions to the Jepson Manual of California plants.
Collection strengths of the UCLA Herbarium include the Apiaceae, Amaranthaceae, Onagraceae, Lamiaceae, and Loasaceae as well as historic collections from the southwestern United States (1900-1960s).
The herbarium is available for use by investigators from other universities, individuals from government agencies and environmental consulting firms, as well as the general public. Plant specimens are actively collected for teaching in courses such as Field Biology Quarter (FBQ) and Natural History Collections in the Biological Sciences. Duplicates are distributed for exchange to the California Botanic Garden, Jepson and University Herbarium, and the Herbarium of the New York Botanic Garden among others.
CONSORTIUM OF CALIFORNIA HERBARIA (CCH2)
The Consortium of California Herbaria (CCH2) serves as a repository and data portal to access digitized herbarium specimens held at other participating member herbaria of California and region-wide. These digitized herbarium specimens consist of high-resolution images of physical specimens, valuable metadata, and possible annotations or determinations pertaining to each specimen. Roughly one-third of the UCLA Herbarium’s physical specimens have been digitized in collaboration with the California Phenology Thematic Collections Network (capturingcaliforniaflowers.org) funded by the National Science Foundation.
