January 2021 – starting the new year off with a burst of lots of time and effort coming to fruition!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

We have FOUR new publications from the Fong Lab!<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Current and former Fong Lab members participated in a graduate seminar led by Caitlin Fong and Peggy Fong, which resulted in\u00a0Flip it and reverse it: reasonable changes in designated controls can flip synergisms to antagonisms<\/em><\/span> accepted in Science of the Total Environment!<\/strong> Congratulations to Camille Gaynus, Shalanda Grier, Emily Ryznar, Lauren Smith, Shayna Sura, Regina Zweng, and Tiara Moore from the Fong Lab, along with Kelcie Chiquillo, Ben Ha, and Aji Angorro from the UCLA EEB Department!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Shalanda Grier is an author of\u00a0Storms may disrupt top-down control of algal turf on fringing reefs<\/em>. This article is the result of an undergraduate group project from the UCLA 2020 Field Marine Biology Quarter (FMBQ) and is accepted in Coral Reefs!<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Shayna Sura is first author of Selective consumption of\u00a0Macroalgae species by herbivorous fishes suggests reduced functional complementarity on a fringing reef in Moorea, French Polynesia.<\/em><\/span> This article is published in Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology<\/strong>, check it out here!<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Responses of two common coral reef macroalgae to nutrient addition, sediment addition, and mechanical damage<\/em><\/span>\u00a0is accepted in Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology.<\/strong> This is the culmination of an undergraduate group project from\u00a0the UCLA 2017 Marine Biology Quarter (MBQ)!<\/span><\/p>\n

Emily Ryznar was awarded a California Sea Grant 2021 Fellowship and will serve her 12-month fellowship with the Delta Stewardship Council! Congratulations Emily!<\/span><\/p>\n

September 2020<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

We have two new publications from the Fong Lab!<\/span><\/p>\n

Emily Ryznar is first author of When form does not predict function: empirical evidence violates functional form hypotheses for marine macroalgae<\/em>.<\/span> This article is published in Journal of Ecology,<\/strong> check it out here<\/a>!<\/span><\/p>\n

Ashlyn Ford and Shayna Sura are authors of\u00a0Testing the conceptual and operational underpinnings of field herbivory assays: Does variation in predictability of resources, assay design, and deployment method affect outcomes?<\/em><\/span>\u00a0This article is published in Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology,<\/strong> check it out here<\/a>!<\/span><\/p>\n

August 3 – 6, 2020<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Emily Ryznar and Shayna Sura presented research at the Ecological Society of America (ESA) 2020 Annual Meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n

Emily was awarded ESA’s Best Student Talk in Aquatic Ecology for her talk “Rapid growth, competitive release via disturbance, and low herbivory pressure facilitate the invasion of a brown marine alga into forests of giant kelp<\/em>“. Congratulations Emily!<\/span><\/p>\n
