About the Exhibit
Based on the book by Patricia Marks Greenfield, the exhibition explores cultural transmission and learning through children’s play weaving and apprenticeship in the Maya Highland community of Zincantán, Chiapas, Mexico. The exhibition shows over one hundred textiles from Zincantán drawn from a research collection spanning from 1943 to the present, including hand-woven and embroidered ponchos, shawls, and huipils in vibrant colors and metallic threads as well as looms and weavings made by children. Maya people wear traditional clothing today and the exhibition demonstrates both continuity and change through the expression of weaving and embroidery. The exhibit also features stunning photographs by Lauren Greenfield, showing how these textiles are made and worn in this unique Maya community of Chiapas, Mexico.
About the Exhibit (continued)
The exhibition was developed and on display at the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, for two years. It was updated and shown at UCLA in 2017. It also includes pre-and post-visit curricula for grade 4-8 teachers that address issues of individuality, group identity, and how we learn.
